PNoys says no to abolition of pork barrel

| On 03, Aug 2013

The President, Benigno Aquino III is not favor  with the abolishing of Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or known as the pork barrel.

Deputy presidential spokesperson, Abigail Valte spoke in behalf of Aquino said that the PDAF is a way for legislators to bring concerns of local constituents.

“Ang trabaho kasi ng national government really is to look at the marco concerns. ‘Yung local po sa kanila ‘yung mga micro concerns. And sino ho ba ‘yung nasa posisyon para malaman kung ano ho ‘yung essential doon sa community?” Valte said.

“Ang sinabi niya, it is really the share of the constituents in the budget, ‘yung PDAF po. So technically, ang trabaho po ng isang legislator ay to bring to the attention of the national government ‘yung mga concerns na hindi po napapansin on the national level ngunit kailangan ng distrito o kaya ng bayan o ng munisipyo na hindi ho kayang pondohan ng local government unit.”

Valte recalled when Aquino was still a senator, he used his PDAF to rehabilitate the flooded part of Gerona-bound Tarlac junction.

“That also shows you that national government cannot be everywhere at once. So doon po pumapasok ang nagiging input ng mga local na opisyal at ng mga legislators para masabi kung ano pa ho ‘yung mga bagay na kailangan ng atensyon sa kanilang distrito na hindi ho kayang pondohan ng lokal,” Valte said.

She also noted that Aquino believes that PDAF can be used for correct reasons.
